Jailbreaking on a Mac is annoying

Two days ago I didn’t know anything about python. However, currently I’m on quest to hack a ps3 I bought for $25 at my local swap meet. I made it to the step where I got my “dump.bin” file after booting up the [PS3toolsset]. Unfortunately every guide available outlines the steps on a PC. I’m on a mac. An m2 Macbook. 1997

Meaning I couldn’t continue without buying a PC. Or so I thought.

During my obsessive reach, I found some randos on reddit saying it was still possible. The Dump Checker uses a python script. Which you can run via the terminal on most macs. The guide below is the first of it’s kind for Mac users trying to hack their PS3 and get stuck on the dump verification step only previously possible on a PC.

How to Check your Ps3 Dump.Bin File on a Mac

Checklist:

  • USB with your PS3 Dump file
  • A tutorial to get you to the step
  • Mac with a terminal and python installed.

Once you download the entire PyPS3Tools folder from the github repo. Once there, drag and drop your Dump.Bin file to the same folder you downloaded it on.

Afterwards, open up terminal on your MAC. You can double check you have python on your MAC by typing in:

Code
python3 –version

From there, you can change the directory to that of where the folder is. You can do this easily by writing in “cd” and dragging the folder into your terminal. It’s actually pretty cool because it pastes in the path to the folder. Mine looked like this:
Code
cd /Users/option_c/Downloads/PyPS3checker-standalone-package_2025-13-09_171026/

Really important to note. You have to make sure there is a space between cd and the the file directory. I wasted hella time trying to figure that out.

Once that’s done, run the following script and python should run and check your bin file.
Another really important note: Make sure the dump file the python file are in the same folder.

Code
python3 checker_py3.py dump.bin

It took me 3 days, reddit, chatgpt, and deepseek.ai to figure this out on my own. For someone who’s never used python before, I felt like a genius when it worked!

Hoping my “retro” gaming enthusiasts jailbreaking their Ps3s for the first time find this helpful 😀
